ELECTROPLATING AND SPARK PLUG REFURBISHING
The products are electroplated bottle openers and refurbished spark plugs. The industry is still grey in Nigeria despite the numerous applications of electroplating technology. An array of application of electroplating services has been observed in the area of jewelry, metal furniture, stationaries, building and household packaging etc. Electroplating is an electrochemical process for depositing a thin layer of metal usually on a metallic base. Generally, objects are electroplated to; prevent corrosion, obtain a hard surface or attractive finish, purify metal (as in the elctro-refining of copper) and separate metals for quantitative analysis. Cadamium, Chromium, Copper, Zinc, Gold, Nickel, Silver and Tin are the metal most often used in plating. Typical products of electroplating are silver-plated tablewares, chromium plated automobile accessories and tin plated food containers. The Federal Institute of Industrial Research has developed and perfected the technology for electroplating and spark refurbishing. The technology is available at the Institute to potential and emerging entrepreneurs through the Institute Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship Development Programme.
FISH SMOKING
Fish Smoking is the process of smoking fresh fish to increase its palatability and economic value. Fish is a low acid moist food that produces a good environment for bacteria growth. Despite its being very perishable in nature, there is an increasing demand for fish in Nigeria which has resulted into increased production activities and massive importation of various types of fish to meet local demand. This necessitated FIIRO to develop a fish smoking process and equipment suitable for the production of hygienic, longer shelf-life and easy to control drying process.
COMMERCIAL MILLING OF NON-METALLIC SOLID MINERALS
Nigeria is very much endowed with vast and varied solid mineral resources which have remained largely untapped. Solid minerals processing is a very important aspect of industrial raw materials sourcing. Most non-metallic minerals occur naturally in impure form and need to be processed before they can be used as direct input in manufacturing. The solid non-metallic minerals such barites, feldspar, limestone/marble/dolomite, diatomite and bentonite are of great economic importance in industries. These non-metallic minerals are very useful as industrial raw materials in many industries such as oil (for oil drilling), plastics, chemicals, glass, ceramics, paint, adhesive, animal feeds, rubber, matches etc. The need for local content development in the manufacturing industries and the high demand for ground non-metallic minerals prompted the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO) to develop technology for milling of non-metallic solid minerals with overall objectives of stimulating industrial development, creating employment, reducing poverty and adding value to the nation’s non-metallic solid minerals.
PALM OIL PRODUCTION
Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit. Palm, oil is a common cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Brazil. It is consumed every day in almost every home in Nigeria mainly for cooking purposes.
TOILET CLEANSER
Toilet cleanser comes under the general classification of liquid detergent. Until the end of the 19th century, soap, the alkali metal salt of long-chain carboxylic acids was the only man-made surfactant. With the spread of technology, the technical shortcomings of soap i.e. it’s instability towards water hardness and acidity were felt particularly acutely in the textile industry. Synthetic detergents as the name implies are synthetic substances having molecular structures which has been tailored to endow the substances with the essential properties of soap with the advantage of not been precipitated by the calcium and magnesium salt in hard water. The term detergent is often used interchangeably with surfactant (a contraction of surface-active agent). More often, detergents refer to a combination of surfactants with other substances, organic or inorganic, formulated to enhance functional performance, specifically cleaning over that of the surfactant alone.
GROUNDNUT OIL PRODUCTION
Groundnut oil is contained in the kernel of groundnut which is also known as peanut oil and is widely used as table oil and also raw material in food and process industries. Groundnut kernel contains 50-55% of oil.
